Mississippi Detective Demoted After Dumping Retired K-9

Every year tens of thousands of police officers retire from service. Normally they get some type of send off from their fellow officers that include a celebration of sorts, with a gift and a cake, or beers at a local bar with good wishes for a pleasant retirement.

This is usually the case for all retiring police officers, even those of the four legged variety. But if that was what Ringo, a narcotics and search and rescue dog of the Jackson, Mississippi Police Department had expected, he was sorely disappointed. It seems that his handler, Detective Carl Ellis, retired him, but felt that the pound was the more appropriate place for his golden years.

Chief of Police James Davis disagreed with the detective when he found that the man who had trained Ringo had adopted him from the pound. He immediately demoted the detective to patrol officer and put him back on patrol duty.

“The Jackson Police Department respects and holds our canines with high regard just as we do any other officer within our department,” said a statement issued last week from the department. “They are family, and we do not feel they deserve anything less than a loving home in retirement.”

One of Ringo’s running mates was Alpha, a German Shepherd, who was adopted by his handler Anthony Fox. According to Ringo’s new owner, he has worked hard all his life now he can enjoy just being a dog.

It goes without saying that those of us here at MMA congratulate both Ringo and Alpha on a job well done and well wishes into retirement. To the now patrolman Carl Ellis, you are a dick head!

Mike, my thoughts exactly. They have civil service protection but I would have him walking a beat at the city dump, or maybe even the humane department.

Jess, humans are often the worse animals on the planet.

Somehow I’d always thought K-9 handlers would be dog people. If I were you, Ringo, I’d’ve bit him…

I would have fired the guy, but they are probably unionized.
