Trump biographer Michael D’Antonio told CNN on Tuesday that Vice President Mike Pence believes he has a divine mission to become president — and he thinks President Donald Trump’s plethora of scandals are his ticket to the Oval Office.

In an interview promoting his new book — “The Shadow President: The Truth About Mike Pence” — D’Antonio claimed that Pence is preparing himself to take over as president should Trump’s scandals consume the rest of his first term.

“Absolutely everything Mike Pence does is oriented toward him becoming president,” D’Antonio said. “His decision to accept Donald Trump’s offer to be his running mate — it even goes back much further. By the time he had left high school, he had decided that he was going to be president of the United States… He thought God was calling him to, now, be vice president and function as a president-in-waiting.”

D’Antonio then turned to Trump’s assorted scandals, which picked up even more steam last week with the conviction of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and the guilty plea of former Trump attorney Michael Cohen.

“We see Donald Trump in this huge crisis, this rolling chaos,” he said. “And I think, with every day, Mike Pence imagines he’s one day closer to the Oval Office.”

CNN’s John Berman then asked D’Antonio if Pence is maneuvering to get to the Oval Office at Trump’s expense.

“Oh, I think yes,” he replied. “I think he’s positioning himself to be the normal guy — the guy you can trust.”

So many statements about God and his will beg the question “which god?” Indeed there are an infinite number that can be proposed and with no evidence for any particular one, they are all equal valid or invalid. So does Vishnu want Pence to be President? The fact is, that his presumption of a mainstream Christian God invalidates the statement – any statement about his will.

I think that presumption is telling. This is a man who isn’t about to have much concern for alternate theologies of philosophies. This is a man propped up by an unwarranted, unsupportable assertion and no matter how many Americans agree, a campaign based on a denomination, a church is not a friendly idea to anyone who supports the establishment clause.

Pence lacks the open mind needed to be an effective leader, since that leadership would be led by tradition, which in many respects is a tradition set by mythological entities and long dead committees and rulers. In this country, as it was envisioned the legitimacy does not stem from any other entity than the voting public – the will of the people. Some of the world’s greatest acts of violence have proceeded from “God wills it” Such things are made possible by people who don’t ask or care whose god it might be, how we know without asking him directly or if there is one at all.

Religion is not, and is not about democracy. The United States of America is. Pence as president, would be inimical to this self-evident truth.
