Looking Beyond the Mueller Report

So, the much-anticipated Mueller report was finally released last Friday, and it wasn’t quite the explosion everyone was anticipating. In fact, it was more of a dud than anything else. Attorney General William Barr summed it up in a memo: “Robert Mueller has found no evidence of collusion between the Russian Government and the Trump campaign, but cannot exonerate the President of obstruction of justice.”
So of course, Trump has been strutting around like a peacock on Viagra screaming, “TOTAL VINDICATION!” because of a memo that he probably didn’t even read, done by a guy who was always going to let him skate anyway. Some vindication. There are probably child molesters in prison more innocent than Trump.
First of all, Mueller said he couldn’t find any direct evidence of collusion- which means he couldn’t prove it. As for the obstruction, Mueller said he couldn’t exonerate the president, which means that there is evidence, just not enough to actually charge him. So why Trump and his base of idiots are laughing it up in triumph like a bunch of hyenas on crack is beyond me.
Trump still has ongoing investigations on him and his businesses in the Southern District of New York, and recent polls show that the Mueller report has done nothing to improve his approval ratings. People still think he’s a guilty scumbag. Not that they’re wrong.
I guess Trump doesn’t understand the difference between being ‘innocent’ and ‘not guilty’. Then again, he doesn’t really understand his job, so that shouldn’t be much of a surprise to anyone.
Ok, so tell me this- if Trump is so squeaky clean, why have so many members of his campaign team INCLUDING his campaign manager been indicted and prosecuted? Why is AG Barr keeping the full Mueller Report from the public? If Trump truly is as pure as the driven snow, why not prove it? The answer is- he can’t. Barr knows that the full report has enough damaging information contained within it to hurt Trump. Trump doesn’t care about it because he thinks it already backs up what he’s been saying this whole time, that he’s been exonerated. He’s too frickin’ dumb to read one page, let alone a few hundred.
Barr says he will release a redacted version of the report to the public, but what he apparently doesn’t realize is, by doing so, he’ll only be making things worse for Trump, not better. People will read the redacted version and think that Trump is just hiding more about his shady dealings than he’s letting on.
And they’d be right.
If I were AG Barr, I would release the full report in its entirety. Because here’s the thing- Trump’s base doesn’t have either the intelligence or attention span to read through the whole thing. As for the people who do, chances are that they believe the worst of Trump, anyway. Besides, with the 24 hour news cycle the way it is now, people will forget about it sooner rather than later. Releasing a redacted version will just raise the level of suspicion that will haunt Trump all the way to the 2020 election.
To be honest, I don’t know why everyone on the left is treating this as some kind of major defeat. It isn’t. It’s a setback, nothing more. People expected Mueller to be the hero that would save us from Trump’s evil. I certainly never looked at it that way. I’ve read comics long enough to know that the hero doesn’t always save the day.
Don’t put all your faith in Adam Schiff to save us now that Mueller is done. He’s gonna have enough trouble just hanging on to his job. The republicans are gonna hound him to resign to the point of hanging himself. If you want to help him, give him all the support he can get.
I’m going to say this once, and it’s this: We have to be our own heroes. No one is going to save us from Trump but ourselves.
We can’t continue to put our hopes in one person or an entity to save us. Hillary Clinton couldn’t do it, Mueller couldn’t do it, the Electoral College wouldn’t do it, and Congress won’t do it.
It has to be US. ALL OF US.
We proved it during the midterms. We gave the House of Representatives to the Democrats. We wanted someone to give Trump some accountability. WE, the people, did that!
Forget the internal squabbling, forget the ideological purity, put your voices to work by voting out that tangerine prick and the cowards who support him out in 2020!
We already know they’re going to cheat; they’ve already started. Districts have been gerrymandered, voter rolls are getting purged, and who knows what the Russians have planned?
The ONLY way we’re ever going to get rid of Trump is by turning out every single person who can vote out to the polls.

I’m not going to say that America is better than this, because the truth is, history has proven it’s not. But what I will say is that, when push has come to shove, this country has always fought against evil.
Even if it’s an evil we foisted on ourselves.
We’re at a point now where we have to stop thinking of what only benefits us; we have to focus on what benefits the country and the planet as a whole.
It’s not a right thing, a left thing, a white thing, a black thing, or a minority thing. It’s a human thing.

Thank you, Bill. As always, your praise means a lot. The Mueller investigation may be over, but if the Democrats want to keep pressing on Trump’s corruption, they should focus more on the obstruction charges. There’s more there than they are looking at, I think.
Good piece Greg. I think you are right about one big thing. We are not as pure as the driven snow in a beautiful New England winter. We, collectively have made some hellish mistakes, but I would like to think we have learned from them. I do believe that this grand experiment in democracy has been a big step in humanity and this brief flirtation tyranny has shown us that, for the most part, this was a good way to go. The question we must now address is whether we let those in favor of dictatorial government, somewhat odd that it is the conservatives and the religious zealots is it not, push their agenda while we sit on out hands and lean back on our thumbs. The one thing that the conservatives and the zealots have shown over time is their ability to pull together and organize their forces.
I always wondered why the conservatives were so capable at organizing around a single cause and sticking together until I heard the joke about the “Thinking Problem” being a Democratic problem. It is an easy problem to overcome, simply become a Republican and stop thinking, just follow the leaders of the bunch. Donald Trump is a snake oil salesman par excellent. He has been doing it for over 40 years with varying degrees of success. He has the technique pretty well mastered now. Notice how he makes a declarative statement, then, in various forms, repeats it several times. Classic conditioning and framing his message, aka, brainwashing of the brainless. It doesn’t work on democrats because they tend to have brains and they like to think about things.
