Susan Collins Is No Profile In Courage

Read Time:3 Minute, 48 Second

by Mark Bear

After her vote of acquittal on two articles of impeachment against Donald J. Trump yesterday, Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) wants everybody to know one thing: Trump “learned his lesson” about soliciting a foreign government to aid and assist his campaign. If you find this shocking, you are not alone, because this is news to me and most likely to Trump himself.

Furthermore, Collins believes that “Trump will be much more cautious” when it comes to mixing his political career with “US foreign policy.”

Well, that is certainly strange. Why do I say this? Because in an off the record “meeting between television reporters and Trump” prior to his State of the Union address, he once again stated, according to The Washington Post when asked whether he “would have done anything differently” regarding the Ukrainian scandal, Trump said he “did nothing wrong.” Again, he provided the same defense as he has since the outset of the scandal stating: “It was a perfect call.”

Did you read that? HE DID NOTHING WRONG! Doesn’t sound to me that Trump learned his lesson at all, now does it to you?

Which begs the question: Why would Collins make such a tacit and bold statement such as she did? Could it be that she is trying to send a message to the plethora of voters she has ignored in her state – and Americans who wanted to hear from additional witnesses – that she took the correct course of action, or, as is my suspicion, is she trying to convince herself?

Adding insult to injury, Collins then fled to Fox News to complain to Martha MacCallum about how she is receiving some very nasty calls. Ya think Madame Senator? I mean a solid 75% of Americans wanted to hear from additional witnesses and instead of persuading your Republican colleagues after a clear and convincing prosecution, you refused while ignoring what the American people wanted; a fair trial.  “It seems we lost the ability in this country to disagree respectfully.” She continued after two voicemails were shared on-air, with the following whine:

It is just a “continuation of the kind of abuse and harassment that has occurred for my staff, my family and me since my vote for Justice Kavanaugh.” You think, Senator Collins? Perhaps you ought not to promise that you will listen to all of the evidence regarding Kavanaugh only to provide a vote to confirm him, nor should you promise to be a fair juror when it is apparent that facts simply were not on your side. I mean Collins is basically doing the Lamar Alexander tap dance here: Trump did it but it did not rise to the level of impeachable offenses. Right! Got it. Remember when all of the Republicans said “Trump did nothing wrong,” only for them to evolve to the Alexander position?

Let me be clear: Nobody should be threatening the life of a United States Senator, nor should anyone be threatening family members, or the Senator herself with violence. We do live however in a republic where the PEOPLE OF THIS NATION has every darned right to voice their opposition to leaders in Washington. It is called our First Amendment right to free speech.

While I realize the Senate has empowered Trump by acquitting him of both Articles of Impeachment, and while Trump has made public that he wants to have a state-run media versus CNN and other cable news networks, and though I realize since the United States Senate failed to remove him from office arguing he did not abuse his authority making the latter quite possible indeed, we STILL have our FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT!

When Collins complains, moans and groans on a major national Republican propaganda outlet simply prove she knows exactly what she is doing. She speaks outside of both sides of her mouth. On Fox News – where many of her constituents consume their news, she argues Trump learned his lesson, while on the other she blames her constituents and Americans for voicing his or her opinion.

Let’s dispel the myth that Trump learned anything! He didn’t and he will continue to test just how far he can go with his newfound endorsed power because THAT is the way Trump has always behaved. For Collins to argue otherwise provides her voters with yet another reason why they ought not to send her back to the Senate.

Susan Collins does this every time, and I think it’s a con. The ‘woe is me’ act is getting old, just like the senator. She talks about wrestling with her conscience and after it’s all said and done she still votes with her gang. It’s all BS.

Mike, She is all for acting as if she has a conscience when, if fact, it is limited to where on this line is she most benefited. She has slipped ever so slowly into the Trump camp. I guess it was inevitable. but to take a stand against your Republican cronies one has to actually have a real backbone. I think that Trump and McConnell ripped hers out long ago.

Susan Collins turned out to not be a friend of the American people. While there is plenty of evidence of that, the most telling was her going to Fox News to discuss her decision and not to, say CNN where she might face some actual substantive questions. Well, I can’t vote for her anyway, but if I could I would use the words from Gene McDaniel’s song, “Tower of Strength”,

“I’d look in your eyes and here’s what I’d say
I don’t want you, I don’t need you
I don’t love you anymore
And I’d walk out that door”

You are dead to me Ms Collins.
