Biden—Pandemic Scapegoating Of Asian Americans Must Stop

President Biden delivers remarks on 1-year anniversary of COVID-19 pandemic.

People shouldn’t be a bit surprised that their president isn’t actively encouraging each other to blame one ethnicity for a global pandemic. Nonetheless, there’s still a lot of damage from the past four years that needs to be undone.

President Joe Biden roundly condemned a “vicious” wave of hate crimes against Asian Americans, on Thursday night’s televised speech. He acknowledged that hundreds of Asian Americans have been “attacked, harassed, blamed, and scapegoated” during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The attacks have been partly blamed on the inflammatory rhetoric of the reckless former president who liked to call the coronavirus the “China virus,” as, without evidence, he blamed China for intentionally planting the virus. Hundreds of thousands of the salivating MAGA crowd believed this nonsensical conspiracy theory.

Sadly, researchers have tallied thousands of racist incidents against Asian Americans over the past year, and the New York Police Department alone reported 28 hate crimes involving Asian Americans in 2020, up from three the previous year.

President Biden said: “They’re forced to live in fear for their lives just walking down streets in America… It’s wrong. It’s un-American, and it must stop.”  I can’t help but agree with our president, and being able to write those words gives me hope for a new America, emerging finally from the hopeless darkness of Trumpland.

I feel like I’m recovering from PTSD. It was a long 4 years after the incompetent blowhard stole the election he list by 3 million votes in 2016. I’m grateful to have survived his failure. Half a million people didn’t.

As the husband of an Asian American who has a daughter in law and a Brother in Law and a grandson of the same persuasion, I’m increasingly conscious of this trend. I’ve begun to look over my shoulder when we’re out together.

Today I got an outrageous email from my US Rep, Brian Mast (R) saying we have to hold China “accountable” because a handful of people hid the data for a while. Not a word of course, about Trump who fired the team responsible for warning us and then hid the data and then denied the data and then blamed it on the Democrats who invented it to make him look bad and then the Media, because – well – that’s the last refuge of scoundrels.

Of course I responded and I’m sitting by my office window waiting for the Black SUVs to come down the street. I was not a kindly response and they are, after all, the party of death threats.

[…] MadMikesAmerica, Michael John Scott reports on President Biden’s condemnation of hate crimes against Asian Americans. There seems to be much more than enough to condemn. […]

OMG (did I just say that). It was so nice to hear a president actually sound like a president. Someone that did not stand there and brag on himself and so concern for America. I was awestruck.
