Humanity-The Virus

Read Time:2 Minute, 19 Second

“Pollution is the introduction of contaminants into an environment that causes instability, disorder, harm or discomfort to the ecosystem i.e. physical systems or living organisms.”

So says Wikipedia. They’re right too.

That is, pretty much, the definition of pollution.

Even nature itself can pollute. Think Icelandic volcano’s. OK, ash clouds are a wee bit inconvenient for people trying to fly in airplanes to places but, ash clouds will do a whole lot of damage to the lungs of any creature who gets in the way of one…actually the magma will do even more, and irretrievably permanent damage to any creature that gets in the way…

So, yes, nature can pollute too but….

….we are the experts. We can beat nature hands down.

Nature? Amateur!

You want to pollute an ocean?

Humanity are your creatures.

You want to decimate a rain forest or three?

Humanity are your creatures.

You want to kill a few Whales?

Humanity are your creatures.

I’m curious.

What does it feel like in America to be scum?

We are you know. The Earth’s scum.

We all want to live and survive. We have children and friends and we don’t want to see them die.

They should though you know….well…perhaps not the very young children…they haven’t had time to screw up yet.

We have though.

In so so so so many ways.

Are we really a life form or are we a virus?

We want to be the former but, sadly, I suspect we’re the latter.

Just a thought.

I don’t have many….

Have fun my virus friends….

I wonder what the Earth will do when it finally decides ‘ENOUGH!”

I mean, let’s face it, the dinosaurs got wiped out and all they did was wander about gently eating trees and, occasionally less gently, each other.

They didn’t totally screw up their planet but off they jolly well went into history.

Here we are…prattling on about politics and oil slicks (oops…there goes humanity again)…and Popes and pedophilia and immigrants (illegal or otherwise)….and injustice and corruption at the highest level.

Does it really matter? Ultimately? Does it?

Are we too late to turn the tide?

I hope not. I so so hope not but…..I’m a fatalist. We’ve gone too far for too long.

Islamic fundamentalists blowing the crap out of us and themselves, politicians across the globe thinking ‘power’, ‘power’ and, occasionally as a distraction, ‘more power’.

We’re screwed.

Join me in a vodka. A last toast to what we could have been.

We could have been magnificent.

We really could have been.

Goodnight America. Sleep well – but keep one eye open as we may not wake up again one day eh?

infidel is right there is even a saying that goes “when one man suffers from delusions its insanity when many people suffer from delusion’s its religion” and most believers actually reject most information that comes to them because they don’t keep their minds more open. so to summarize religion makes helpful progress take longer

Lots to read and think on here. ta 4D.

I would liken us more to a cancer than a virus. After all, we are a natural part of the earth that has grown unnaturally demanding of the resources that all must share, which eventually could lead to the other “systems” shutting down and death of the host. Pretty much what cancer is.

If we had alien pod beings that infiltrated humanity (or another species) than used our bodies as hosts- that would be more like a virus.

Either way we have fucked up the earth for the other creatures, and we should be ashamed that money is the reason.

The earth may very well mount its own immune response in the form of a humanity destroying virus. Or a zombpocalypse.

We do. They’re called religions. (Brain parasites.)

That infidel sounds like he’s in favor of redistribution of wealth. You make me sad Mike, permitting communists to sully this good place.

Actually I think the Commies were more into re-distribution of people…..

Big H : It means humanity are – or can often be – the scum of the Earth, at least in the way we abuse it.

Holty : H didn’t think I just meant Americans did he? Everybody Big H. Everybody – including me spewing exhaust fumes everywhere as I teach people to drive thus creating more car owners to spew more fumes out….I’m evil I am…

Jess : Maybe. Maybe. At least more and more peeps are aware and trying to make some effort now.

Infidel : Very true old bean. A more positive view of the state of play. Perhaps you are reigniting my hope with that comment.

Demeur : In the book ‘Better Than Life’ (Red Dwarf II) by Grant Naylor, Earth becomes the ‘dump’ planet after humanity has colonised the solar system. If we ever do colonise the solar system I wouldn’t put it past us!

Mr. Dinners – Harry, like all of us, sometimes grasps the wrong end of the stick. Infidel, for example, understood completely, and offered a superb rebuttal. We should all be so smart.

4D — I wouldn’t worry about creating more drivers. Anything like that in Britain will be dwarfed by the effect of billions of people in Asia and Latin America attaining middle-class incomes and wanting their own cars. Which they will, and which we have no right to try to stop. Think more of how countries like Britain and the US, which their large numbers of scientists, will be the ones to develop the technology to reduce emissions from cars and otherwise minimize their impact.

Holte, thanks for the kind words!

Oh the Earth doesn’t care one way or the other. The Earth will always win in the end. Everybody should know that. Critters come and go but the Earth will be here long after we’re gone.

Pollution and environmental destruction are at their lowest level in the developed world since the industrial revolution. Forest cover in the US has been increasing steadily since 1900.

Compare the Thames, and the air quality in Manchester or Birmingham, with what they were in 1830.

The greatest environmental destruction is happening in the tropical rain forests, where human population densities are very low, but people are very poor.

The solution to environmental degradation is wealth. Rich countries can afford to spend money to protect the environment. Poor countries can’t, and don’t.

To save the environment, we must help the poor countries of the tropics become rich so that they are willing and able to protect their environment as we have protected ours.

There is no such thing as over-population. Every new mouth to feed comes into the world with a brain and a pair of hands attached to it.

When the Congo is as rich as the Netherlands, it will be as clean and safe and healthy as the Netherlands (although it will never be as crowded).

We are not a virus. Viruses have no minds.

I don’t think it’s too late, ever to take care of the earth. I think we all need to start taking care of this little blue ball we call home, or said blue ball will not take care of us. I do my part and try to educate others about taking care of it. It is all you can do.

cheers old bean…

but we have to keep fighting our destructive urges old bean….We may fail but at least we must ‘go down kicking and screaming’ eh?

We owe that to The Earth…we owe her much more actually
….but at least she’ll know we didn’t mean it…

…we just couldn’t help ourselves…

Excellent post and I agree with every word. I have long maintained that we are little more than a “virus” in the belly of a giant beast. Soon we will kill it and that will be that.
